Dating approximately to the 19th century, The Red Oracle is one of twelve surviving Tibetan divination cards.

A vivid red figure sits cross-legged at the centre of the card, surrounded by bold fields of red, blue and green. The simplicity of the composition gives the figure an extraordinary presence, with the intense red pigment dominating the image.

Red is a powerful colour in Tibetan Buddhist imagery, associated with magnetising activity, energy and the transformation of desire. Rather than carrying a single fixed meaning, colour works alongside the figure, objects and other symbols within an image to communicate different qualities and forms of spiritual activity.

Like many of the figures in these cards, the precise identity of the Red Oracle is difficult to establish from the surviving image alone. That uncertainty is part of what makes the card so intriguing: a striking fragment of a divinatory tradition whose imagery has survived more completely than our understanding of how every card was originally interpreted.
