A BAXCO original product-design study reimagining a Mallinckrodt ether bottle from c. 1898. Ether was one of the substances that transformed surgery, helping to usher in the era of general anaesthesia and allowing procedures to be performed without the unimaginable pain that had previously accompanied them.

Its enormous medical usefulness came with a rather less convenient characteristic: ether is extremely volatile and highly flammable.

In the modern era, Ether entered a darker chapter of its existence through its use as a solvent in the production of freebase cocaine, a predecessor to crack cocaine. Comedian Richard Pryor famously joked that he set himself on fire while freebasing cocaine after spilling ether over himself. The ether detail is probably apocryphal, and a great example of a comedy genius exercising a little artistic licence, but the story has prevailed and is still mentioned today as a cautionary tale on the grim reality of drug addiction. 

Stripped back to the bottle, label, typography, and chemical structure, Ether represents one of the more remarkable chapters in The Apothecary Cabinet: a substance that genuinely revolutionised medicine, despite being rather alarmingly combustible.

PRINT & PAPER

Every BaxCo print is produced on Hahnemühle Photo Rag® 308gsm, a heavyweight, 100% cotton fine-art paper with a beautifully soft, lightly textured matt surface. Acid- and lignin-free and compliant with the ISO 9706 standard for age resistance, it is specifically designed for museum-quality fine-art reproduction.

We print using archival pigment inks for exceptional colour, tonal depth and detail. Together, the paper and pigment inks create a print designed to resist fading and retain its character for generations when properly cared for.

International delivery
We ship worldwide. Delivery times vary depending on destination and will be shown at checkout.

Each print is carefully packaged to protect it in transit. We want you to be completely happy with your print. If your order arrives damaged or there is a problem with your purchase, please contact us and we will put it right. If you change your mind, prints may be returned in their original condition within 14 days of receipt. Please contact us before returning an item. Custom-sized prints are produced to order and cannot be returned unless damaged or faulty.
